What’s behind Daniel Ricciardo’s punchy statement on his McLaren F1 future

Daniel Ricciardo has reacted to increasing speculation about his Formula 1 future by insisting he is committed to McLaren until the end of his contract next year – and he will not ‘walk away’ before then.
Ricciardo’s deal with McLaren runs to the end of 2023 but as he has continued to struggle, the team has privately been waiting to find out whether Ricciardo will exercise an option that HE has to leave early.
Several drivers have emerged as potential replacements, including the highly rated Oscar Piastri, who for several weeks has seemed destined to join Williams.
So what’s Ricciardo said – and what, if anything, does it change about his and McLaren’s current situation?

Charles Leclerc winning the Austrian Grand Prix was a huge surprise to everyone. Well maybe not to Ferrari fans but they are a bit biassed. Max Verstappen has been dominant at his home circuit in recent years and his form this year has been second to none meaning he was firm favourite to take the chequered flag at the Red Bull ring. So how did Ferrari’s Leclerc take the win in Austria? What went wrong for Red Bull in what looked like a faultless race? We think we might have the answer so stick around to find out.

    Ricciardo would have suited Alpine

  2. Kevin Williams

Unless McLaren have a superstar lined up it won't be worth paying Riccardo off.

  3. Philip Gardner

Don’t you have to buy your seat in F1?

  4. Chill Out

Same happened with Alonso too. Maybe they need to look at the actual car

  5. Ashoka the Great

If a yeehaww Indycar driver (not racer) replaces Ricciardo in F1, I'm never going to watch F1 again or visit the Singapore GP. Let them proof themself in F2 first like everyone ells.

  6. mochagreen

YES! The parent entity chart is BACK lmao, this needs to stick around 😂

  7. ADI SHARMA

    get jehan in that mclaren

  8. gcm747

Can we all agree that Seb hasn’t been a competitive driver since the dawn of the Hybrid era. Why anyone would see him as a desirable addition to their team is beyond me.

  9. Jesus Vargas

If they think Albon will do better than Ricciardo they're insane.

  10. Derailed

    their car is shite

  11. Cam F

I’m sure that McLaren have not met Daniel’s expectations either.

  12. Baron van Dedem

Following F1 for many years, I clearly see this as retirement confirmed. Just politics, nothing more nothing less.

  13. Mark Lynch

Can McLaren not have a young driver program like every other team without it meaning Ricciardo is out? Whether or not they’re sending a message to him that there are potential replacement drivers out there, he’s effectively ended the speculation which has been largely media driven. McLaren are a mid pack team and mid pack teams often have disparity between drivers as they’ve invariable gotten the car design wrong. They may finish 8th or they may finish 7th if he performs 🤷‍♂️. Find something else to report about

He'll likely stay at McLaren for another year..Piastri and Indycar drivers are gonna struggle

  15. Lucifer Morningstar . Danny

Let’s not forget Zac brown has stated” we’re not giving Daniel te car he needs “ we are all working hard to climb the grid.

  16. whassupg39

It’s hard to watch him going through this, but I’m glad he doesn’t want to quit

  17. TheEarlofK

Frankly, Ricciardo has made some terrible career moves, although I'm sure he's better-off financially.

Running away from Verstappen was never a good look, and now he finds himself a virtual McLaren No.2 to Norris, but on far more money.

I'd be amazed if McLaren didn't terminate his contract at the end of this season, financial penalties not withstanding, top drivers simply don't take as long as he has to adapt to a new car.

  18. Rich Cook

Ricciardo got thr same problem as Boris Johnson

  19. Skeeter McTavish

Swap race engineers between Ricciardo and Norris. That would be an excellent test and show of form. (Ferrari swapped Vettel's engineer to LeClerk in 2019, look how that turned out)

  20. Michael-paul drew

Vettel swap. Be really cool to see vettel in a mclaren

  21. Vasillis Polizos

The same was happening with Ferrari. Charles and Carlos have been complaining until Spain about their tyre management and how quickly they are losing grip even with high downforce.

Edit: is it me or Ferrari are expected to bring a big upgrade package at Spa too?

  22. Steven Anthony

Pirelli distributes the tires to the teams, right? Maybe they have a deal with Ferrari…

  23. Ethan Nixon

Red bull fans come up with every excuse possible even if he finished 2nd

  24. Gary Simpson

If Aston Martin got Vettel to have a hair cut it would definitely save some weight of the car-driver package.

  25. elektr1fyyツ

lol cant you guys handle that max was just slower than the ferraris that race, or youll just blame it on car problems

  26. Charles Mutinda

The weight thing is just plain wrong. Redbull spent so much money trying to shed weight off the car, it would be just plain stupid to load it up again.

  27. Liam Dilley

This covers nothing on the flexible flaws which will make matters worse.
Since the FIA raised it to all the teams, since Ferrari and Redbul while denying it have also been the only big complainers about the directive clarification it is a clear indication of what they have been doing.
Since Mercedes who tried to match the ride heights of their rivals just had super trouble with that (with the stiffer plank) and not being able to get to the bottom of it compared to their rivals it explains a lot.
With their rivals likely to then either have to increase their ride height, lose their rake setup and maybe suffer aero flaws on top of that they could be loosing a chunk of perfomance. IF they initially try to keep ride height but change the floor they may suffer bouncing, go against the new directive and get told off and then again raise their ride height and run into issues.

Since Mercedes have had these issues and had time to work it out and apply various updates they are working through that. The other two teams will now have to do the same and how long will that take them?
You could see a shift in the standings as a result. I

  28. X

the problem in austria was that max his floor was damaged and perez got hit

  29. Dave Davids

The fact that Ferrari was so fast in Austria may have been because Ferrari pushed up the engine a bit further. That could have been the reason for the blown engine of Sainz. But yes, the tire wear with the RB's was remarkable. But both Ferrari and RB are still 40 sec ahead of Mercedes, so the championship is still between those two teams. I hope it goes down the wire, till the last race, would be a great season. We have seen some great racing so far, hope it continues like this.

  30. Osric Johnson

Max yet to win a championship, you guys saw that Lewis 8

  31. Alexander the Great

Checo could have won that race had Russell not pushed him off! Ok, maybe Checo should have waited till DRS was enabled. I think he was afraid that he be stuck behind Russell too long and the other three usual suspects would be too far ahead.

  32. Fergie the Manc

    Charles is faster than you

  33. Anthony Foster

All cars were around 10kg over weight at start of season and tires lasted much longer than 13 laps. I would suspect other issues like temperature windows of tires rather than simply weight.

  34. amooosed

so it would seem that Red Bull is going to be working on some weight reduction upgrades again. hopefully they dont get an DRS issue again.

  35. Realbaddonnie

Bro Ferrari has always been the fastest car if you don’t kno that you’re just an f1 groupie and need people like this Mercedes channel to lead you

  36. deezyking66

    Good we all hate redballs

  37. Shawn Corradini

All in all this is prob the cleanest most competitive racing I’ve seen.. I bleed red but boy oh boy red Bull has def got us on our toes. Be very interesting to see how all of this unfolds into the 2nd half.

  38. Jack Tanner

That pointy front end probably explains his qualifying performance. Now when they understand it’s set up, he will be unstoppable

  39. Paolo Inocencia

More oversteer?? Tire degradation??? Yeah….I don't understand either!

  40. Robin Brown

I don't know if the rumour is true, but some people claim MV has a subscription for a heated seat! Could that extra weight be the reason? The heated seat certainly hasn't helped Lando Norris!
