Great video! Was on the rail when Maple died,the track vibe was silent,neve seen anything like it. Grew up 30 miles south of the Spa,been going since 1989,this meet has been sad and pathetic.
It's meaningful to me to see something from commentators that expresses how saddening that weekend was. I had followed Ever Summer since she was a yearling. She actually had a bad fall, was off for a long time, then came back better than ever — and now this. And by the time of her death, because of Sopran Basilea and Maple Leaf Mel, it felt like there was this doom hovering and it fell on the one filly I had been keeping track of and rooting for, for so long. So as far as solutions… I know that veterinary science has shown that often horses who break down have invisible injuries. Is there a scan (PET, nuclear, ?) that can show this? Could it be required for horses to have a clean scan on a regular basis? But for Sopran Basilea and Ever Summer, I think that may not be the case. I think they stepped in holes. Look at Cogburn bobbling sharply as he wins the Troy. Look at poor Caravel struggling to get over the bog in the same race. The turf was damaged by the extreme weather and the races should have been taken off much sooner. Was it handled correctly for the P-5, no doubt it was not, but that situation wouldn't have arisen if the races had already been off. I understand the pressure with horses coming from overseas for some of the big turf races, but I think the races should already have been off turf.
Due to circumstances I haven't been able to follow much Saratoga this summer…I didn't know all of this has been happening….I don't think it's just at Saratoga….I understand at small bush league tracks.. but at Saratoga is alarming… horseracing has so many problems I am beginning to think it's demise is imminent….

Maple Leaf Mel going down made me cry. For the horse, her trainer, and the sport.

The Sport is too slow for young people. Too long between races. Odds fluctuate. The smarter ones notice the goofy takeout. The game has ruined more people than has lifted people.
90 Percent of Horse Wagers are made by Degenerate Gamblers. Heck 30 Percent Takeout would not faze them so this will not affect much. If Mel was a 40K Claimer trained by Bob Hess or Fausto Guttierez somehow the incident would carry less weight.
It's insane that what 4 out of the last 5 days on national television we've had something happen. This is the worst year ever for horse racing, I had the worst betting meltdown I've ever had after Mel and the horse the next day I stopped betting Saratoga and lost every single race at any other track. Also thank you guys for putting this up someone needed to talk about things. And I didn't even get into the Linda Rice, Irad Ortiz, Stewards. But thanks for biting the bullet on this someone needed to.
I remember a horse pulled up on the Tuesday of Derby week and I was counting who was where because that was the 2nd horse that pulled up Derby week on turf… and the groom and hot walker are running and so your trying to find out who it was… and as I was you look back and Saffie's horse just drops and what angered me more is the lack of people that were not race fans that didn't care. I had someone we was right about 2nd or 3rd row and about 8 boxes down and we go "Oh my god the horse just went down" and multiple people looked at me, right next to me and said "No it didn't" That was the most angry I ever was at a racetrack. The Maple Leaf Mel is one of the worst saddest times I've been watching races.
Blah, blah, blah. NYRA is run by the state of NY. Not racing people. What do you expect? They're commies. They give the positions at the track as political favors. The states started killing racing when they went nuts on lotteries.

I would normally say that horse racing cant catch a break but they deserve everything that is happening. I agree with you that People in charge need to change or this sport will go away. That would be even more crushing to me because like you, I am a diehard.😢

Why did we put Jena Antonucci on a pedestal for being the 1st woman to win the Belmont, but no one looks at Melanie Giddings and maple leaf mel breaking down? Giddings just went out on her own, and MAYBE she didnt see signs of the horse? Its at least worth discussing, since Giddings just went out on her own and doesnt have much experience…

The $1.2M pk 5 con job was horrible. Taking races off the Turf 1 min to post. Only Maple Leaf Mel breaking down just before the wire was more disgusting.
SANTA ANITA, CHURCHILL DOWNS, DEL MAR, BELMONT AND NOW SARATOGA HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE TRACK KILLING HORSES OR INJURY 🩸🤕.
HOW COME I DON'T HEAR THIS FROM THE WORLD 🌍 UNDER AUSTRALIA 🦘? OR JAPAN? OR ANY OTHER PLACE EXCEPT US. OR DO THE REST OF THE WORLD SWEEP IT UNDER THE RUG? I DON'T KNOW BUT THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES DESERVE BETTER. CANADA DOESN'T HAVE THESE PROBLEMS DO THEY. I PLAY WOODBINE & OTHER TRACKS UP THERE. THE JAPANESE THREAT THEIR HORSES LIKE ROYALTY HAVING HORSE POOLS SO THEY CAN SWIM…GET MASSAGES ETC.
