What are the implications of Sudan's fighting on Egypt? | Inside Story

Sudan is in turmoil with no end in sight to the fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
Neighbouring nations, already dealing with an influx of refugees, are worried that the violence, too, will spread.
At an emergency meeting of the Arab League, Egypt’s representative called for an immediate ceasefire, highlighting the close ties his country has with Sudan.
But that relationship means Egypt is supporting one side over the other.
How much of gamble is it taking?

To understand a country’s actions, you must first know their geopolitical interests. Egypt is a country extremely dependent upon the Nile River. Any state that builds a dam upstream threatens Egypt’s fundamental economic viability. Building a hydroelectric dam is a good idea that any functioning, effective government upstream of Egypt would make. Therefore, it is in Egypt’s interests to ensure that the nations upstream of it are not functioning countries, because failed states don’t build massive dams.

Egypt will do what it can to prolong and intensify this conflict because doing so is in their geopolitical interests.

  35. Afran Wal

Although Egypt denys the interference, but the truth is they are waiting to find a way to be the boss of the region.

May Allah bring peace to the land of our Sudanese brothers and sisters.

  36. Afran Wal

For sure Egypt's hand on this crisis, and surely Egypt wants power over the region

  37. The Juice

Clearly Egypt needs more control over the Nile

  38. The Juice

The Egyptian lady isn't touching on any of the facts the 2 gentleman are throwing at her. Clearly Egypt is a major factor in why there's a civil war in Sudan now. 🙏🏾

  39. Aamir Chaka

I find it difficult to believe that Egypt, a military dictatorship itself, wouldn't take sides and emphasise transition to civilian rule
