In the Bay Area, Cal and Stanford are academic powerhouses that would both literally be buried in the (irrelevant) Ivy League if they were on the East Coast. Also the Bay Area is a pro sports market first and foremost. Sports fans care 10X more about the pros. High school and college sports only matter to a small percentage of diehards, students and alumni.
Um can you say Utah? Packed stadiums each week. Voted best student section…
The PAC 12 is not just California teams.
Pac-12 fans don't care about sports to the same degree as fans from other parts of the country. Except the Olympic sports. I hear Cali folks go wild for fencing
Here in Oregon, fan enthusiasm is high for both teams. A lot of Oregon fans were less that pleased with Cristobal’s offense. So enthusiasm is high with Lanning’s. Plus, Lanning seems to have recruiting chops comparable to Cristobal’s.
Over at Oregon State fans are really excited about the direction Jonathan Smith is taking that program.
At U$C, if Riley doesn’t win immediately, fan enthusiasm will wane dramatically.
WOKE CULTURE and FOOTBALL don't mix at all…. The revelation of what the PAC12 distributed to each of their teams after the last year is hilarious. In comparison to the ALL MOST HIT DIRT BIG12's distribution??? The PAC12 league is in dire straights. Hopefully Lincoln Riley is the Savior everyone believes he is. Cuz i'll tell you, if touting the Run'in pUkes at Utah is all the PAC12 has in it's barrel? The PAC12 is the League in trouble. Not the BIG12…. What's that saying? Go WOKE, Go Broke? Can't wait for UCLA to sport an all C-R-T Girlie Man team…. NOW THAT would be entertainment….
What I'd like to see is a AAU superconference. It could start with an PAC10/B1G superconference with all AAU schools. It could be two divisions, the Pac10 (a more traditional name) Arizona, Cal, UCLA, Colorado, Oregon, USC, Stanford, Washington, Utah with additions of Kansas from the Big 12, Mizzou from the SEC and Iowa ( Iowa would remain with the B1G academic conference) Nebraksa will have to rejoin the Big 12 or could replace Mizzou in the SEC as Nebraska has no AAU status. The B1G would remain the same with as before mentioned Iowa to the west and Nebraska out. It would be a coast to coast conference that could actually crown a champ, unlike the very regional SEC. And over time is possible if not probable most of the other AAU schools (except the Ivy League)would follow suit and join up. It would get massive broadcast dollars because the alumni of this group of schools are large and have very deep pockets. I'd imagine some of the SEC AAU teams would be a little more resistant to coming over, but they would. This conference could put the college back into college football.
You can kick your game off at 9am. Ok Now you are competing with the 11&12 am kickoffs east of the mountain time zone. Nobody cares. As far as the PAC12 is concerned that whole part of the country could fall off into the Pacific and no one would notice
The west coast doesn't have the football culture as the southeast has, In Texas high school football is a religion, the west coast football is just another sport. ThePac 12 and MT West are both so spread out regional match ups aren't 50 miles away, it is 300 miles away, and one would have to travel 100 miles to see your "home" team unless you live in California. People feel they have better things to do than spend a whole weekend to see a football game. Pac 12 after dark was a stupid idea, no one east of the rockies can watch the game and not everyone on the west coast wants to see USC, UCLA or Oregon or every week. The Pac 12 has become unwatchable. And SEC burnout has become a factor too, always being forced to watch Alabama, Georgia etc..has added to west coast apathy towards college football.
Utah and Oregon are the only fanbases that care in the Pac12.
Doesn't matter because USC and Oregon are headed to the Big 10
Some places just aren't college towns.
I grew up a USC fan but it's true they're not very passionate and very fair weather-y. My wife is a Utah fan, they're pretty die hard, but I would agree they (PAC 12 fans) are not passionate other than the U. My family cares more for other schools now, but now that USC will be decent my Dad and I are like "Oh cool they're going to be good again…but do we care about them still?"
Yes the PAC 12 needs to make some adjustments but they still haven’t been dismantled like the Big 12 or the old Big East. Those remaining Big 12 schools were begging to join the PAC 12
Utah won best fans in the country this past year..
This is why Lincoln getting usc was big when usc starts winning having that villain role back national spot light back on the conference it’s going to generate money hype noise and every program in the conference is going to benefit from it the fan interest will rise you’ll see
The PAC 12 needs to do a deal with ESPN or Fox Sports. The ACC and SEC Networks are great. The pac 12 channel is a disaster. When I had Direct TV i could not get it. I have have YouTubeTV and I can't get it. I end up watching lots of Mountain West football to see local teams.
A big issue I’m seeing in the media is that they like to measure West Coast fans to there view of what a fan looks like. If I live in LA, Portland, Phoenix, or Salt Lake think about the trails I could hike within a 5 to 15 minute drive. Imagine the camping people plan vacations around that I can just impromptu plan. Most people who move out this way do so because they like that lifestyle…. Open air freedom. That’s not to say people in other regions don’t do the same thing. It’s just a different culture we just watch football from the mountaintop.
Just here to say GO COUGS!!!
If the Pac is first in apathy, the Big 12 has to be a close second. Most these fans don't even sell out their home games, let alone travel to a road game.
I think the point we’re missing is that there’s so many things to do year round on the best coast that it’s just not as big a deal as here, where you’re looking for entertainment for 4-6 mths a year while the weather sucks.
