The clever engineering behind the virtual yellow first-down line you seen on TV for NFL games.

Since the late 1990s, the virtual yellow line has been quietly enhancing football broadcasts by giving viewers a live, intuitive guide to the state of play. The graphic is engineered to appear painted on the field, rather than simply plopped on top of the players, so it doesn’t distract from the game at all.

The line debuted during a September 27, 1998, game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals. It was developed by a company called Sportvision Inc. and operated by six people in a 48-foot semi-truck parked outside the stadium.

ESPN was the only network that immediately agreed to pay the steep price of ,000 per game. Before long, other companies began offering the yellow line to the other networks, and now you won’t see a football game without it.

Bengals wont sniff another super bowl appearance, they played like frauds

  4. Space Ghost

The Rams were the better team. We all knew the offensive line of the Bengals wasn't good enough.

  5. Joe King

That Tyler Bond drop was a low point.

    And Stafford threw 2 picks!

  8. Mike Laurel

I like how he said.. Jalen Ramsey should of been in a better position not to get face masked and get his head spinned … @4:44 Some of these announcers are idiots..

I completely agree with Chris Simms. I was fine with the officaitng all game even when there were blatant holds by the rams in the endzone and then the higgins opi/facemask. It's the super bowl, just let them play ball. But then to change the script in the last 2 minutes of the game was hard to stomach. Oh well, it was a great game and helluva season. Time to go all in on that attrocious o-line in FA and draft. Who-Dey!!

  19. NightRyder16

Doing what the rams did by going all in is a good way to win a superbowl but it won't lead to year in year out consistency

  20. Skyler Hargrave

So Ramsey got humbled on an obvious PI come on man you gotta make that call. We know y’all wanted little Joey to win. Close but no cigar buds

  21. sTrax

The graphics aren’t there to sell you things… correct, so they compensate this by sticking in adverts every chance they get and even Picture in Picture adverts too. And I thought the UK had it bad at peak hours 🤣

  22. YoYoSwift

    good video explaining this!

I'm sure I've seen ads on the field during NFL games in the five years since this video was released.

To be totally honest, the only reason I don't watch hockey much is because of not being able to follow the changes of possession. "Glow Puck" in today's NHL would seriously get me interested in watching more hockey…

I love the new additions to the NFL games. It’s super futuristic looking. I think a football fan transported from the 70s seeing a modern televised game would be totally mindblown.

  39. bruh peep this one

It’s all fun and games until red line
