Near the end of every September, the phrase “magic number” becomes common in the lexicon of baseball fans around the country.
Teams both in the mix and on the periphery of the Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason picture carefully examine the standings and calculate just how many wins by their team or losses by competitors it will take to clinch a playoff berth.
The Seattle Mariners have the longest postseason drought in MLB and haven’t had a magic number to worry (or get excited) about in most of the seasons since their last playoff appearance in 2001.
However, the 2022 Mariners are firmly in the mix for one of three American League (AL) wild-card spots with nine games remaining on the schedule.
So what is the Mariners’ magic number, and how does that figure evolve as the final days of the season wind down?

As if last night Yankees lost 91 70Boston won 91 70 Seattle won 90 71 blue jays won 90 71
This where it gets crazy Yankees loss 91 71 Boston lose 91 71 Seattle win 91 71 and blue jays win 91 71 this last game is for the season let’s see what happens
Thanks for breaking it down…Inhad to watch it twice to wrap my head around it. Bottom line is Jays needs to win all to sweep.
I need Milwaukee to win and the Giants to win so the Giants can take the NL west !!!!
Mariners are making the offs. Fuck every other team
I feel like the Sox and jays aren’t gonna make it
Michael Wacha might surprise people. He is motivated to do well, since he is going into free agency; and he no-hit the Astros in Houston during his last outing (5 innings). Although the Yankees probably still have the edge, this matchup is probably closer than people realize. Plus the Rays have an uncanny ability to win, no matter who they put on the field. That's just what the Rays do.
If Riley Adams miraculously heats up and helps power the Nationals to beat the Red Sox, Blue Jays fans will feel a bit better about that awful Brad Hand trade.
My best scenario would be:
Yankees lose all 3
Mariners win all 3
Toronto wins all 3
Boston loses at least two
That would make it Mariners on top
Toronto in second either tied with Boston or Boston eliminated depending on which game they won and Yankees eliminated
Love the Jays but being 4-6 in the last 10 shows the Jays aren't ready for the playoffs.. Next year perhaps #nomoremontoyo
Seattle hasn't been to the playoffs since 2001…im rooting for them….
I want to see Blue Jays and Tampa Bay…It has to happen (payback)
Ryu…Keep Barrios feesh
Heartbreak loss yesterday for the Jays…I though Robby Ray-Gun would settle down in the 2nd. After they tied and went forward, I thought he would be pulled, but Montoya left him in for another HR..Total swing of momentum. They HAVE to win all 3!!! GO JAYS!!
But, it's not impossible for Jays, Go Jays!!!!
Last nights loss was a tough one. Wildcard spot is slipping away. Wish the Jays could have won 1-2 of those games they should have won during season. Way to many of those blown kind of games lost this season. Rays don't want to play Jays in playoffs, you can count on Rays playing their bench, and call-ups…
Go Mariners
Now the magic number is 3 for the Mariners… let's go Mariners
Mariners win, Orioles lose! Magic number is 3 now! Go M's!
if Mariners win tonight, they will cause a double elimination, for both Twins & White Sox.
Yay! Another close finish for a wild card spot! 🤣
Mariners will be lucky to get 5 runs the rest of the year….:(
