One of our own made it to the pinnacle of his profession when former Hilton Head High and South Carolina Gamecocks pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski got the call from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday and made his big-league debut a few hours later against the Milwaukee Brewers by striking out the first batter he faced. Mlodzinski gave up a solo homer in his debut but that was the only damage in 1 ⅓ innings, and he retired all four batters he faced in his second outing Sunday. Many more MLB innings to come.
And the next generation of Hilton Head baseball stars have been showing off during all-star season. The Hilton Head Ozone team finished its impressive run through the district tournament with a 17-4 win over Jasper in the title game Friday, punching their ticket to Moncks Corner for the state tournament in July.
The 8U Coach Pitch All-Stars from Hilton Head are close to claiming their spot in the state tourney after two dominant wins. They’ll face Bluffton National for the championship tonight, and Hilton Head won the first meeting 12-0.
And the 10U Minors district tournament got rolling over the weekend in Walterboro, with Hilton Head and Bluffton set to square off tonight with a spot in the championship game on the line after both recorded blowout wins in their openers. We’ll update you tomorrow on Last Night in the Lowco.
