Welcome to The Athletic FC’s YouTube channel, where best-in-class journalism meets video.
We love statistical analysis here at The Athletic, but it’s important that certain metrics are used with the necessary context. Here’s three stats that are often misused.

Personally the most misused stat is expected goals. That stat is literally just the YouTuber stat so that they don’t have to look into the actual stats of the game in context. Just a generic, “hey they were supposed to score this much” and ignore the context
Just read the article.
Possession is not a good measurement of which team was a dominant one. As possession is number of passes from one divided by sum of passes from both teams times hundred percent. I consider shots to see which team was in high gear. Some teams are ball carriers rather than possession merchants.
For a player like debruyne who try to play 90% of his passes through the opponent defence low pass completion is expected
Why would we read on a different website. Just full on explain the breakdown
Times dribbled past
The psychology of a game is more important than the stats. It wins you big trophies.
20 isnt a third of 80 genius
Saka is a fraud lol 😂
If you have a low passing accuracy it's usually a sign you're trying passes that aren't working. Bruno Fernandes is the mastermind of this.
People have this assumption that set pieces are a free hit at goal. You still have to create and score the chance, it's part of the game. Saka has that many chances from corners because he's good at crossing a football, Arsenal are the best set peice team in the league for a reason. If you want to go one step further Saka has the highest X/A in the league and has created a ridiculous amount of big chances.
Not really misused… they just don't tell the full picture sometimes.
Why isn’t the chances created from set pieces not a good metric? These should definitely count as a good stat
Good video. So many broadcasters still waste our time with useless stats. I love stats, but broadcasters need to show ones that are actually insightful and not misleading.
Take my boy sakas name out your damn mouth
Saka has created 21 chances from dead balls, 98 from live passes, 6 from take-ons, 8 from shots, 3 from fouls won and 1 from defensive actions. One third?
True especially for chances created. It can also get boosted with a 5yrd pass to a player that shoots straight away. Think Bruno. He's been bad this season but has one of the most chances created in the league. All Utd wingers do is cut in and shoot.
Haaland also just doesn’t need to touch the ball that much to score. His positioning is legitimately some of the best ever.
Throw-ins should be considered set-pieces
Surely there’s an open play CC stat…
Poor ManU fans😂
