A race won by Jonas Vingegaard, with Chris Froome and Vincenzo Nibali making up the podium… you’d expect a mountainous affair, but instead this was a flat criterium with a largely fixed result. Dan discusses why these races exist, plus rounds up the CX action from the week, featuring an exciting new generation of riders led by Fem van Empel!

Which race are you most looking forward to in 2023? Let us know 👇
The SdWox women kit is indeed 🔥 👌
With regard to kits: I think there is something to be said for the iconic, immutable jerseys of the "golden era". Think of the jerseys of Molteni, Peugeot, La Vie Claire. Not to mention, if you wanted to support your team, you didn't have to go out and buy a new jersey every year.
I'm sorry, but those bike branding advertisements on GCN+ aren't documentaries, they're really just ads. Please, I want to learn more about them – just less marketing. As it stands to get real info and evaluations on bikes I can't go to GCN.
yeah man 😂

@GCN Caption: Aero bar safety, pfft, I just got skewered by a drop bar.
My favourite bit of this video is seeing me at 2:33 on the side of the road
I am so addicted to The GCN show. Thank you guys for all you do to feed my cycling addiction. I dont want to have a cure! Haha
How refreshing to have some non-French teams as wildcards in the Tour.
If VDP struggled with his back then why does he still easily finish 2nd? The guy just can't ever admit being fairly defeated by WVA. Not once.
Dan:
I think you've worn the same jumper for a week!
More Jeremy Powers please…
If you'll let me pay with PayPal, i'll subscribe in a heartbeat. Credit cards are a no-go though.
Good to see you back, Lordy!
But….Why are you wearing a sweatshirt we can’t buy, unless we are an XS…:-(
Will you be covering the national championships of all countries?
13:35 they hired kids for sd workx?
Great show – thanks!!!
Cracking from Plapp. He looked shocking with 100km to go. WVA is just mega! Interesting Trek documentary too.
if plap does well down under then i can see if invited to tour of quatar that he will do well there to
Dan! I’m so glad to see you got your hair cut. Lookin’ sharp!
What do you make of these fixed end-of-season criteriums?
I miss the golden age of smoking large cigars while competing in bicycle races.
#UCI needs to promote more #urbanhomelessandhungry amateur racing
The Crits are are fun for the spectators at the roadside and, I think, for the riders too. No-one takes it seriously. What's not to like?
Agreed! It's all part of the show. If it brings some of the world class cycling stars into communities where there aren't any world class races that would attract, then a little show helps bring this level of cycling to the masses. All in all, it's good for the sport, good for the bicycle companies, etc. Win-Win! I think.
ALL racing is rigged.
As A kid I still remember watch tour Winner Bernard Thévenet at Crystal Palace ( long track former car racing track no gone) doing a crit, which he won, I was impressed as a 12 year old crit racing schoolboy. I didn't care if it was fixed ( he came 3rd I think) it was the Tour winner, in my hometown!
I mean, would it really have been that bad if two great Sprinters in Philipsen and Cavendish were sprinting it out for the win? And I also think it is a lie to the spectators. I don't know how well the audience members in Singapore and now Japan are known to cycling. Because they might start to think, that a GT-Champion (Tour-Champion, because for the ASO only the Tour is the thing) is also the best attacker and sprinter on the flat. In my opinion, this could give very new fans a very wrong point of view of the sport with its different rider types.
F**** pathetic, as is Dan for defending it.
Well, at least they didn't imitate in Singapore AEW, otherwise we would have had an old Froome (imitating CM Punk) heavily complaining in a press conference about Pogacar, Vingegaard and dunno, Remco (random names to imitate The Elite) to be "spoiled idiotic EVPs of cycling world"
What was the argument between Sweeck and Iserbyt that Dan referred to?
Can't find anything on the web!
My friends have Read a book about the Fixed. So when I was watching the Race. I was thinking about my friends told me about the books 🤣
An important part of cyclocross is 'tyre choice' to cope with whatever the surface is; mud, sand, snow, rocks, … . I think they made the wrong choice … 😬
people would do anything for money…..this is why people should stop considering this people idols and think of them just as person who do things we like…I think it's awful
I wonder what would happen if some rider that was meant to stay back and lay low decided to go off-script and guns it
Were those Euro guys really complaining about a few pebbles on their cyclocross course?
Would have known it was a fixed race when TDF GC riders racing for Criterium. Then again it was more of promotion my country and bringing the sport close to the fans. I was there in that day. Never imagine I can have so up close experience with my favourite cyclist where I can only watch them on TV. I manage to take pictures standing beside my favourite cyclist like Jonas Vinegaggard, Sepp Kuss, Rohan Dennis and Chris Froome. I will never imagine that. It was such a good experience.
So long as it's promoted as an exihibition
The notion of a fixed race disgusts me! It's a lie, it makes the audience into fools, it makes all race results suspicious. Was Montreal's race fixed? Yates, Van Aert, Pogachar, a coincidence? All the racers are dopers nothing has changed? Are they athletes or circus performers? And what about the people who legally bet on the races?
Why fixed races? So we don't notice when actual races are fixed, for different reasons….And besides, winning at sport, it's essentially pointless anyway.
