Sports Betting 101: What is the Point Spread?

What is a point spread in sports betting? https://www.oddsshark.com/sports-betting/point-spread-betting

The easiest way to describe a point spread is to define it as a number oddsmakers use between two teams or sides in an effort to generate betting interest on both of them. The favorite team usually starts the game with a deficit defined by the negative number, and the underdog starts the game with a head start, defined by the positive number.

When looking at the point spread, you take the final score and subtract the spread from the favorite’s score. If the favorite still “wins” when you subtract the “spread”, then your spread bet will be a winner. The opposite is true if you’re betting on an underdog. When betting on an underdog, you “add” the “spread” to the underdog’s point total at the end of the game. If the underdog “wins” with the new calculated score, your bet will win.
