Offside in Soccer (Football) Rule in Under 2 Minutes

Rule 11 is one of football’s shortest rule, but also one if its most misunderstood.

In the early days of the sport, it became common for players players to “goal hang” – where players would just hang around their opponents goal and wait for a long ball to pick up an easy 1v1 against the keeper. This wasn’t very entertaining, nor athletic, so the rule was first introduced in 1863.

Because of this rule, soccer games are extremely low scoring and the sport will probably never be a huge deal in the USA.

I'm sure it's been said here already, but goal line is incorrect, it is the byline, ie from the line from corner flag to corner flag.

since when they change rules the goal kick can produce offside like the play nowadays? i realise this is 2016 video.

I once called offside went three attacking players were all together charging the goal, dribbling the ball forward and passing the ball to each other as they went. There was no defender between them and the goalkeeper. As one of them passed the ball forward to his other teammate running a few feet ahead, instead of passing sideways or backwards, I flagged the offside after that player touched the ball. Boy were the parents mad! I think I was technically correct but perhaps emotionally incorrect. I don’t think the offside rule was intended to stop such a play. All 3 attackers had successfully outpaced the defenders. I didn’t get any real resolution from the rulebook or my superiors, so I’ve always wondered if I made the right call. According to your explanation, my call was correct. But I still felt bad about it.
