Inside the control room: turning NFL football into primetime television

The NFL’s most exciting game isn’t played on the field. It happens behind the scenes, as hundreds of cast and crew come together to turn a football game into a football broadcast, the show hundred of millions of viewers see every week. I would also like to know about the business end of things…
So does the broadcaster (aka the television network) own the mobile editing and control stations ( inside those big trucks), the various video cameras and microphones throughput the stadium OR do they hire a third party to supply all that plus all the necessary people? I know the sound editor said he was a consultant.

The sports commentators (I know they are employed by the broadcaster) often comment on replays shown throughout the match. So who makes the decision to show the replay in the broadcast, the commentator, the video crew or the broadcaster? In one recent Worldcup match the commentator could not see if there was a handball on his monitor. So he peaked over at the monitor used by a commentator for a different network which had the replay from a different better angle.

So, what about international sporting events like the world cup…
These events are covered by multiple broadcasters based in different nations. Does each broadcaster have their own control and editing room? Do they get their video from the same set of cameras in the stadium OR do they have their own?

This video is so amazing, thank you so much for sharing it. I always thought that different angles were taken with the drones but in fact, is a mechanical axes cam. this is so intense so pro and so cool. thanks

In the year 2022 NFL Thanksgiving behind the scenes show the lack of Diversity in Hiring. Sad!

i worked as cameraman in formula 1 , tour de france, tennis and other kind of sports. No bad paid, but honestly, at least on Europe, i spent sooooo many hours otside my house… Still it could be worse.

Oh my gosh I want a job like this.

I do the most basic stuff possible with camera switching and output stuff at my church, but I love it. This is so cool

This is racist and misogynistic. It’s only white men that do these jobs. And I bet they are all straight. This is how the heteronormative misogynistic patriarchy oppresses the world.

Every single tech, manager, and director looks absolutely tired/exhausted in this video. It is also eight years old. I wonder how many people in this video are still doing this in 2021.
