  5. @isaacclay126

Boy, sorry it was so hard to find. Where I live it grows everywhere as ground cover. It grows more than the grass here.

There are two problems with this one. The first being it NEEDS acidic soil, so deep, thick mulch (you can plant partially in mulch) is necessary, and maybe even an annual application of sulfur. The second is it's prone to dry out in the winter and needs to be planted in a sheltered spot shielded from winter wind. In harsh winter it might die all the way down. But otherwise, quite a beautiful plant year round. A little prickly, though.

Just found your channel, love it! here in Boulder, Colorado, Mahonias are safe go-to despite wonky weather, compacted alkaline soil, long hot dry summers. And wind. Early bloom not only attracts pollinators, it's very fragrant. Grows in shade beneath trees and in full sun next to pavement. Green or bright red foliage all winter depending on the amount of sun.

Here, in the UK, Mahonia flowers in the winter, which is why I think it’s unpopular since no one usually gardens at that time. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Also "Ore-ghin"

As a lifelong oregon gardener I have seen this and many types throughout our state. Just today I was doing some bonsai and thought, "huh i wonder if anyone has used Oregon grape as a bonsai" so i went out my front door , walked across the street to the ditch and pulled one out and brought it home to bonsai. They are great plants.

I bought a few mahonia at a plant auction one year. I planted them in a shade bed with high hope. Unfortunately, not one survived
    And I’m in zone 6.

All the Garden Answer merch hahahaha.
I agree about finding new stuff to plant, I am hoping to do that here in my garden, hard to move away from the norm when that's all the garden centers tend to sell though 🙁
I'm hoping to find some new stuff this year.

It also is a great source for tasty honey. It does get leggy though, and usually needs something planted in front of it. Maybe take some hard wood cuttings. Organ!
