amazing video! loved it
I discovered that I don't know how to serve thanks to your video, now I know how do it correctly thanks to you, how well explained! ty, greetings from Colombia ❣
Wow!!! The kind of masterclass one dreams of!
Hmmm … Of course I recognise Venus's greatness as a tennis player – perhaps that's why I was so surprised at the poor advice given in places! Of course she's right about avoiding the common "waiter's tray" approach and moving away from the western or semi-western grip but most advice suggests a continental grip rather than the eastern for beginners.
Somewhat related is her advocacy of a pin point rather than a platform stance – the problem there for beginners is that it adds another complication in the overall movement, adds more for the beginner to worry about, whereas a platform stance avoids foot movement and provides a simple, firm base. When the basics are there and movement is more intuitive is the time to experiment with the pin point and any other changes of stance. The serve is the most important but also the most complex stroke and it's therefore critical to avoid fancy frills and complex muscle movements while learning. There are several positional check-points worth noting and her suggestion of videoing yourself is spot on.
Snapping the wrist is widely taught but it seriously misunderstands the proper process and brings a high risk of wrist injury and even elbow damage. It's an easy but inefficient, unnatural and dangerous fix. Try standing facing forward with your dominant arm raised straight up and angled as if you were going to chop forwards and down (or hold your racquet, continental grip and so edge forward as Venus rightly advises); keeping your arm straight sweep it down in a forward arc keeping to the same side and you'll find it easily and naturally rotates to a palm down/back position. This is what's called long-axis rotation and is a shoulder movement not a wrist one. You'll also find that your arm keeps to the same side until the rotation (known as pronation) is over when it naturally curves across your body and your elbow bends as your arm starts to rise up. This is a simple, basic form of the very complex kinetic chain involving shoulder and body rotation in different planes which brings the power, speed and ball control of a good serve. And avoid wrist snapping at all costs!
At last the serve explained clearly. Thanks Venus.
Wow!!! Just Wow!!! Thank you so much!!! <3
Beautiful! thanks for doing this.

Not only an all time great tennis player, but also an excellent teacher. Your instructions are very precise and calm. I loved it and learned a lot. Thank you.
Thank you for focusing on the grip and footwork prior to serving. I'm sure it's going to help me be more consistent with my serves.
