How to Fix US Soccer – Part 10 – How MLS' Schedule Hurts US Soccer –

How to Fix US Soccer – Part 10 – How MLS' Schedule Hurts US Soccer –

How to Fix US Soccer – How to Fix USMNT – How to Fix US Soccer Federation – however you want to say it, it is apparent that US Soccer has some significant problems. (Considering we saw the USA eliminated from World Cup 2018, that’s an easy statement to make!)

Today I want to talk to you about MLS’ schedule, how it contrasts to European leagues, and why I think it holds back both American players and MLS.

Think mls main problem is not snow in winter or super hot summers as this is not unique to them ( although huge travel distances for away teams going to these games makes it a lot more off a consideration/problem ) … but is going forward as soccer gets bigger club attendances is that more nfl and mls teams from the same city will share stadiums (and if it’s done well like Atlanta and even spurs stadium In London uk then that is a good thing more like nba nhl sharing and not like the cluster fuck that was nfl mlb teams sharing in the 70s etc ) this will make scheduling harder unless nfl say sticks to Saturdays games only and mls to Sundays (or vice verses) … either way at the very least even with an fall 2 spring euro calendar I would have a winter break for the majority nfl playoffs at least… and not sure mls helps itself playing in mid summers when World Cup and/or USA playing in a tournament at the same time? Think a Mexico essque 2 half seasons with a break in winter for nfl playoffs/snow and a break in summer (in World Cup and gold. Up years only) would be the way to go … and you have the choice off 1 either starting in spring still 2 in August like England or 3 always have 2 mini but separate season per calendar year!

build closed top stadiums .. it cost more but for regions of lot of snow it is great solution

Stop making us a retirement league and start signing these south American kids we won’t grow as a retirement league

If MLS are going to keep the current system then US Soccer needs to schedule AWAY friendly games during the break (I’d say no easy matches but we can’t beat Trinidad smh) so that our players get international experience ON THE ROAD. Even better if our young European players get permission to come back for a game or 2. Pulisic needs to stay in Germany until qualifying but everyone else (weah etc) should be playing as many international matches as possible

GHG you didn’t even get into the fact that the CONCACAF champions league knockout rounds happen during MLS pre season because we aren’t aligned with the FIFA calendar

hey gray hair gaming, i was trying to contact u thru twitter a month or two earlier but i am a novice twitter user now twitter is blocked in vietnam now that i live in vietnam, i liked your video break down very much, i raised a similarity between the USA and Japan how the two counties are so similar in almost everything about economy, technology, school systems, sport facilities and now that the J league and MLS are very much established around the same time, but J league has taken off to the point of being very successful in comparison to the MLS in producing a regular wc participant unlike the US team, the japan national team always know that in order to be in the wc they have to play thru qualifier games, they know that it is not a birthright to be in wc, i would love to have u to look at these comparisons .here's my email if u wanna discuss in details phivumai@yahoo.com,thks

The only issues I have with switching to a fall-spring schedule involve trying to fit all the games without completely overhauling the league format. The 2017 MLS schedule runs from 3/3 through 12/9, leaving 36 weeks (not counting international breaks) for the entire regular season plus playoffs. Assuming a fall-spring schedule started the first weekend of August and ended Memorial Day weekend with the winter break running from mid-December until the weekend after the Super Bowl, there would only be 32 weeks (again not counting international breaks) to complete the season.

In this case, I think there would be 3 options: 1) Condense the whole season by those 4 weeks, which would create a bunch of midweek matches that nobody will watch. 2) Eliminate the playoffs, which would kill attendance for all but the best and most well-supported teams. Pro/rel would fix this, but the US league system is not ready for that yet, especially since it would require all pro leagues to make this change. 3) Move up the start of the season, which would defeat the purpose of switching to this schedule by making the summer window too short for teams to do much.

As much as I like the idea, I don't see how it can realistically be implemented.

Too many folks are confusing soccer(American), with football(International).. Two entirely different things.

Snow isn’t a problem. People go see NFL in Seattle and Green Bay in January, the NHL has been making a scene with outdoor games. If the product is good, fans will come.
We know the real reason why it’s like this: TV Sports Revenue.
From August-Early Feb Sundays are owned by the NFL. College Football owns Saturdays from Sept-Dec. The NBA owns most of May-June (that not owned by the NHL). College BBall has March/April. Baseball really only owns October, and as the big US sport on the decline, it has plenty of room to share with its humdrum 162 Games. Summer gets taken over by the Summer Olympics, and the World Cup every other year (one or the other). Both screw with the MLS schedule too, but National Team soccer does that anyway.
So here’s an odd suggestion: Play February to August. There isn’t a Major US Sports Championship to contend with in August and players & owners still have a place to match with Europe’s windows.
Also, and this wasn’t mentioned, the lack of midweek games probably doesn’t help.

What does USA football even do right?

    Bring in a promotion/relegation system.

You hit the nail on the head. The league plays the bulk of their season when other leagues are on a hiatus. But the bigger picture here, and why they do this, is that there's not as much interest as the league prefers. If you look at England, even small clubs have die hard fans and regularly travel to see the away games (even though England is a smaller country). MLS doesnt have that kind of interest.

  14. Greg Spradlin

The weather argument is a solid one scheduling wise. Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the like play with winters off and go through the summer international breaks. Something that may make more sense for MLS is to follow the central american/Mexican scheduling model. This is where the schedule is split into two equal parts "opening" and "closing" each is like a mini season with playoffs at the end. This allows for both summer and winter breaks off to align with international breaks.
