Extraordinary! 59-year-old jockey celebrates his first-ever winner and comes from miles back to win!

A fairytale success!

Simon Condon turns 60 next year but won’t have enjoyed many better days as he guided home Eat The Book, who he owns himself, to a remarkable victory at Kilbeggan. The rider has been competing in the saddle since 19 years of age but, incredibly, this is his first ever winner and all the more special as the horse was bought by his father.

Detached early, the rider stayed patient on the nine-year-old gelding, creeping into contention on the final circuit before making his challenge down the outside of the field and forging clear for a most unlikely success.

A jubilant Condon said afterwards: “I’ve been waiting a long time for it. This is my first ever [winner] and I’m delighted for my Dad as he had bought the horse for me to ride.”

Almost didn't happen. Eat The Book actually tripped on one of the fallen horses. Lucky also that Condon had opted for staying on the outside of the track. It sure must've been nice to finally get a win, but he's just an amateur jockey who's competed in only a few dozen races in his lifetime, most of them point-to-points. So this win is not all that noteworthy after all.

    Wow, congratulations, Mr. Condon.

Extraordinary to see you upset the field and show your mastery of horses in that way.

I hope you have a good day today because you made mine better

This is the most ridiculously long, making it a dangerous race! Cruel. Hopefully no horses were hurt in that fall.

Wow…you all missed "Investigate TV" on NBC reporting on the majority of the horse trainers use drugs to win. Guess it doesn't matter even horse racing is highly involved in cheating and cheaters all because of money and greed to the abuse and the death of the horses and many, many horses have died over years for this cruel sport!! Shame on all of you!! SMH

They force the horses to go way beyond the limits of reasonability for their health and physique and then kill them if the poor animals suffer an injury, the is nothing but a blood sport.

Cuidense.
