With NBC recently getting back into the baseball business for the first time in 22 years with their "MLB Sunday Leadoff" program on their streaming service, Peacock, I wonder if CBS would consider trying to put baseball games on their Paramount Plus streaming service.
CBS had their MLB coverage when I was in middle school and high school. 6 of the 8 World Series participants in those years were from the eastern time zone. Living in Michigan, it really sucked not being able to watch much of the WS games with the games starting so late. CBS would televise a 30 minute sitcom at 8PM, then start their WS coverage at 8:30, with the first pitch about 15-20 minutes later. Many of the games didn't end until after midnight in the east. Luckily I was able to watch game 6 in 1993, which was on a Saturday night, in its entirity. Grateful there wasn't a game 7 the next night, since I had to be at school early Monday morning. That night my grandma was over staying with my sister and I, while our parents were at a convention in Detroit that weekend.
this was the FIRST sporting event i remember in my young life.
The Toronto Blue Jays of 1992 and 1993, an underrated World Series Champion.
How appropriate for CBS last mlb game.
Return in 2022
Major League Baseball was in hindsight, entering an uncertain future in 1993. CBS was winding down their four year contract with baseball, which was a financial disaster. Going into 1994, MLB was going to hedge their bets on the revenue sharing experiment with ABC and NBC known as The Baseball Network. Plus, 1993 was of course, the last year that MLB would use the two divisional alignment, since the following year was supposed to have been the first year of the divisional playoff series and the wild card.
Game 6 of the '93 also turned out to be the final World Series game that would be played for over a year and half due to the strike. I think that a microcosm of MLB's uncertain future was the fact that Dr. Bobby Brown, the then president of the American League, presented the World Series trophy instead of the Commissioner of Baseball. The fact that there was no clear cut "leader" or central authority figure in MLB (Bud Selig was still officially, the owner of the Milwaukee Brewers at the time even though he was thought of as a place-holder until a "real", full-time commissioner could've been found) gave out the inclination that sport was directionless going into 1994.
You know as Tony Kubek once said about Mickey Mantle "Just as he was learning to say hello, he was saying goodbye!" This is kind of the way we feel here at CBS Sports. It doesn't seem possible that our four years as the caretaker of the "National Pastime" are over, but here we are…saying goodbye. And in that short time, not only did we have probably one of the greatest World Series ever between Atlanta and Minnesota, the seven gamer, we had also had arguably, one of the greatest World Series games the other night. And folks, how about this one tonight!? In all, and you're looking at them now, a lot of memories…a lot of good memories! And we hoped that you cherish these pictures and these sounds as much as we enjoyed bringing them right into your homes. Time to say goodbye, but knowing full well…that the grand ol' game will never say goodbye! It's just keeps rolling up…the memories! For all of us here at CBS Sports, I'm Pat O'Brien, thank you…for watching and…goodnight everybody!
Playing Billy Joel's final song was such a nice tribute.
THIS YEAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON FOR 71 YEARS VERY LONG TIME
Thank goodness, CBS basically ruined the coverage of Baseball on networks. NBC was the gold standard before and CBS did the complete opposite of how to cover baseball games. Tim McCarver became insufferable during his tenure on CBS. The only positives it was they go to cover the 1991,1992, and 1993 World Series which were pretty exciting and hiring Jack Buck for the first two years but then they canned him for Sean Puberty Voice McDonough.
how many years of memories
CBS' production of the games was good enough but fans could tell that they didn't really have a commitment to the sport. They showed only 10-12 games all season and there was no rhyme or reason as to when they would be on. At the time the magazines would mock them by saying CBS stood for "Covers Baseball Sporadically"
From Sean McDonough of CBS Sports to Bob Costas of NBC Sports (until 2000) and Al Michaels of ABC Sports (until 1995) aka. "The Baseball Network"…
Then 3 years later fox and Joe Buck would ruin baseball
Former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Brian Jordan played 2 sports as well!
The early 1990's weren't too kind to CBS. They lose the NBA in 1990, then after four years lose MLB in 1993 and the big blow was losing the NFL in 1994. But they managed to get themselves back together.
Should have kept the MLB on CBS
I think it's only appropriate that Carter's blast sent CBS out with a bang that way. =)
Seems like mike McClure always picks the cardinals team total or ML
PS the Mavs have hit the under over 90% of the time. And when GS played Memphis, which is the two fastest offenses in the league, only hit the over 50% of the time in their series.
I swear the site plays are donations 🙂
tough day at the office yesterday
