Copa America 2001 in Colombia. All Goals.

The 2001 Copa América was held in Colombia, from 11 to 29 July. It was organized by CONMEBOL, South America’s football governing body. Colombia won the tournament for the 1st time without conceding a goal.
Brazil were the defending champions who were knocked out from the tournament by Honduras after suffering a 0–2 defeat in the quarter-final.
There is no qualifying for the final tournament. CONMEBOL’s ten South American countries participate, along with two more invited countries, making a total of twelve teams competing in the tournament. Originally, Mexico and CONCACAF Champions Canada were invited.
Prior to the tournament, three meetings were held by CONMEBOL authorities who were concerned about potential security issues in Colombia. On 1 July they announced the cancellation of the tournament. Venezuela offered to host the competition, but on 6 July CONMEBOL decided to reinstate the plans for Colombia, and the tournament was held on schedule.
When the tournament was originally cancelled, Canada disbanded its training camp and Canadian players returned to their club teams. The Canadian Soccer Association announced they would not be able to participate in the reinstated tournament. With only a few days’ notice, Costa Rica (CONCACAF) accepted an invite to take Canada’s spot in the tournament. The Costa Ricans advanced to the knockout stage, losing in the quarterfinals.
Complaining about the sudden reversal, and claiming that Argentine players had received death threats from terrorist groups, the Argentine Football Association decided to withdraw from the competition on 10 July, in spite of Colombian authorities proposing to implement additional protection measures. With the tournament starting the next day, Honduras (CONCACAF) were invited, arriving with barely enough players on 13 July in an airplane provided by the Colombian Air Force, after the tournament started and just a few hours before its first game. The Hondurans performed well through the tournament, finishing in third place.
Despite the pre-tournament concerns, there were no incidents of violence nor acts of assault towards any of the participating nations.

Great performance by Colombia on home soil. Winning without conceding a goal is a great achievement. Enjoy as usual 🙂

Maybe not the best tournament but by no means the worst. This one had a lot of drama, surprises and many revelations. Frankly, it wasn't the Colombians' fault that Argentina pulled out. Argentina claimed they were receiving death threats (who knows if that is true), only to complain about the Colombians reinstating the tournament. What were they angry about? This was one of the more dramatic Copas because in the midst of ongoing political violence and with last minute replacements, Colombia worked hard to make it happen, going as far flying the Costa Rican team to the tournament in a military plane. Lastly, legendary Brazilian goalkeeper Marcos still conceded goals against Honduras, which shows that Honduras was on another level. Keep in mind this was not Colombia's best squad, but they did what they were supposed to do. I enjoy this Copa and am proud of Colombia. Enjoy this for whatever it's worth.

  10. Byron Escudero

People saying that this Copa America was bad, bruh r youse seeing the one we are in Rn? Horrible referring and use of VAR, played in the same country as 2019 (and moved their cause of COVID) and worst of all, no fans. I think if Brazil win, people are going to forget it except for Brazilians. If Argentina win, people will remember it because of Messi

  11. AK-Naton

Everyone in South America unanimity considers this the WORST Copa America in the entire history of the tournament. Argentina (which was the candidate to win it at that time) didn't participate due to threats by the cartel, Brazil went with a 3rd tier team, Uruguay played only with players from their local league. A Copa America with such a low level of football is unprecedented. I hope Colombia one day gets to win a Copa in a more legitimate way, because no one except them consider this a true victory.

Nobody cares about this copa america. Argentina didn't participate, many teams brought their team B. the level of football was bad. this was certainly the worst or one of the worse copa america ever

Argentina nunca ganara nada honestamente !

  16. Luca Brasi

Lo siento pero debe ser una de las peores copa América de la historia.

  17. jzlnz

What a great copa. It was my semester break before continuing at uni. Timing is great for Asian viewers and the quality of football was at its best. I even rate the tournament better than Euro 00 & World Cup in Japan 02 ( my favourite R9) for the attacking flair. Great memories and great for Colombia to host the tournament amid ransom issues before the start.

  18. ROUBEEN FERES

  27. Adrian Carballo

I think she did a great job.

  28. Christian Vargas

whats wrong with the commentator? They need to have British commentators. You just dont shout gooool if you are narrating in English.

I'm all for female commentators but can you get someone with a voice that doesn't make everyone suffer for 90 minutes?

  33. Jonathan Puza

I've been watching futbol all my life, I'm 31, and I enjoyed the commentator. She's very informed and knows her soccer. Better than those noisy over dramatic Univision guys😁

  34. A Jones

i thought one of the requirements to be an announcer is that you have to get through puberty first?

  35. midwest traveler

What the heck is wrong with the commentator. If i say something they will blame patriarchy and will cry feminism. Simply its not your job baby. You are good at somewhere else
